Christmas Ornament Crafts

This has to be my favorite holiday activity with my children. It's become a family tradition to create new Christmas ornament crafts every year - not only for our tree, but for gifts as well! This takes an entire afternoon or two, and some time to waite for things to dry, but it's been a lot of fun for us the past several years!

Christmas Ornament Craft Supplies

Before you can actually make your Christmas ornament crafts, you'll need to first get your recipes and supplies ready. Below you'll find 4 different types of recipes you can use for your Christmas ornament crafts.

What You'll Need:
Recipe for Dough Ornaments (see below)
Cookie Cutters
Straws
Paint
Glitter
String or Ribbon

Ornament Recipes:

Our Family Ornament Recipe:
2 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
1 c. water
Mix all together, adding more flour if needed. Cut shapes with cookie cutters or make your own shapes. Before baking, use a straw to poke holes at the top to be able to string them up when they are done. Bake at 200 degrees for 30 minutes, longer for larger ornaments. We use this particular recipe every year because it's the easiest.

Cinnamon Ornaments:
1 c. cinnamon
1 c. applesauce
Mix equal parts cinnamon and applesauce, stir and knead until doughy. If it is too wet, add a little flour. Roll out thinly, cut shapes. Be sure to poke a tiny hole at the top of your shape for threading a loop through. Lay shapes flat on a screen or rack to air dry. When dry, you may push thread or wire through the hole for a hanger. Use as Christmas tree ornaments or closet air fresheners. They smell great! They do not get moldy; but handle carefully because they do break.

Salt Dough Ornaments:
2 c. flour
2 c. salt
1 c. water
Mix and roll out on floured surface. Form cookies and put in hooks. Bake at 200 degrees for 1 hour.

Spice Ornaments
4 oz. cinnamon
1 tbsp. ground cloves
1 tbsp. ground cloves
1 tbsp. nutmeg
3/4 c. applesauce (warm)
2 tbsp. white glue (Elmer's)
Combine all ingredients. Knead dough for 3 minutes. Roll a portion at a time to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out with appropriate cookie cutters and place on cookie sheets. Make holes with toothpick or straw. Dry at room temperature 2 to 3 days. Decorate when dry. Makes approximately 32 (2 inch) cookies. NOT EDIBLE!!

Instructions for Christmas Ornament Crafts

Use any of the above recipes for our basic dough, and follow directions. Make sure you poke your holes in the ornaments before baking, and allow to cool before starting in on the next step.

After the ornaments are baked and cool (we usually wait over night), you can start decorating them. Get out the paints, and have at it! Set aside each decoration and let the paint dry before adding any other decorations. We wait until our Christmas ornament crafts are dry before adding glue and glitter.

This one activity can be great for something to do in the winter months on the weekend, plus turn into a fun family tradition like it did for us.

Additional Christmas Ornament Crafts

The following ideas for Christmas ornament crafts were sent into us by one of our visitors. This is a wonderful idea, and we've done something similar in the past with the ornaments above.

"Another wonderful christmas keepsake is ceramic handprint ornaments. Most of the "paint your own" ceramic places have ball ornaments around the holidays. Have your kids dip their hands in paint and touch the ornament. You can then add their name and the year and once fired you'll have a beautiful keepsake."
