Flower Garden Ideas
While the middle of summer or even fall might not seem like the time to be thinking about flower garden ideas, it's amazing what you can do to the landscape of your home all summer long.Introduction to Flower Garden Ideas
Before I dive into flower garden ideas, I'd like to first give you a little background of how I got started on my own garden. When I moved into my first house, there was already flowers planted on two sides of the house. The back of the house on the other hand, was a complete mess. I liked to call it my garden of weeds. Lots of room for lots of flower garden ideas.
I was no expert, and this was my very first house. Even though my dad's family once owned a greenhouse for many years, I was still pretty clueless on where to start. Flower garden ideas didn't immediately come to me.
Handling Weeds
Before I even thought about flower garden ideas, I knew I had to first take care of the weeds. This was a huge project, but one I really didn't think twice about doing. I do not like chemicals of any kind, so I pulled them all by hand. It's not as bad as you would think it is.Before I knew it, I had made it a habit of pulling weeds and working in the garden every day while my 2 small children played in their pool or in the backyard. Somewhere in the back of my mind, the flower garden ideas started to come forward.
Starting Flower Garden Ideas & Projects
As I spent more time in my yard and around my flowers pulling weeds, I started getting flower garden ideas for that bare stretch in the back of the house. Having an abundance of tiger lilies on one side, I decided to thin them out, and use what I had pulled for the back. My neighbor said to me one day "I don't know if you'll get anything to grow there, but it's worth a shot". Luckily, she was wrong.More on Tiger Lillies
Orange Tiger Lilies are like weeds around here. They grow just about anywhere, regardless of the amount of sunlight or soil. What I once called my "weed garden" is now completely covered in bright orange lilies. As I continue to pull tiger lilies that spread quickly, I plant them in other places. Just two years after planting a few along the side of my garage, I now have a beautiful line full of lilies. No trim to weed, and it's alright if they get snipped by the mower. Tiger Lilies are also known for not dying even when completely cut.
Fillers & Trim
In addition to tiger lilies, you will also find quite a bit of Hosta around. Another plant that will completely take over, and is easy to grow. It needs little sunlight, and actually will grow better in shade. There's tons of different types of Hosta, and honestly I couldn't tell you which "type" mine is. However, I can tell you it grows well and makes for a nice "filler" in between flowers. Our Hosta was already growing on the same side as the tiger lilies, so when thinned it was placed in the middle of the tiger lily line by the garage. It made a nice "break" in between lilies. Hosta will also be planted around the deck to keep the weeds and mowing down.
Another nice "filler" is Snow on the Mountains. I was able to get starts from my step mother, and it was planted around the tree which stands in the front yard. While most of my flower garden ideas are for the back yard, I decided the front needed a little help too.
Additional Flower Garden Ideas
The latest addition to our list of flower garden ideas is Iris. One of my absolute favorite flowers that grows easily in just about any soil. Starts were taken from another family member, and planted in between the tiger lilies in the back where there are still a few bare spots. The best part is the lilies and iris grow directly under the kitchen window. There's nothing better than looking out your window to see flowers. In addition to flowers which absolutely will not die, we also like to plan annuals in certain places. This flower garden idea is special, since you don't need to have the same flower in the same place twice. Each year we pick up seeds for flowers that look pretty and we know will grow. Marigolds, Morning Glories, Bachelor's Buttons, Moon Flowers, and Alyssum are just a few of what we've tried so far.
More flower garden ideas include using areas where grass doesn't grow. At one point in time our kids had a plastic sandbox. I absolutely hated it, so it was taken out. It left an ugly round circle where the grass was dead in the back yard, so we decided to use it for flowers. Now we use it every year for our annuals and it looks very nice.
There are several more flower garden ideas you can pick up simply by taking a look at your own yard and then taking a trip to the greenhouse. You might be amazed at some of the simple things you an do with a few starts and an imagination!
