I absolutely love the smell of a pot roast in the oven. It give your home that comfortable, warm, and inviting smell. Not to mention with an easy pot roast recipe you can make a meal for your family and have left overs for a week in just a few simple steps. Personally, I prefer to use the oven when cooking pot roasts, but you can use a crockpot for any of the ideas you see below. I won’t hold it against you if you decide to use a crockpot!

There’s probably hundreds of different ways to cook a pot roast in the oven. Just like pasta, it’s one of the most versatile foods outs there. While the directions of my oven pot roasts are always the same, the ingredients sometimes change. Below you’ll find two different ingredients I use for cooking a pot roast in the oven. Again, you could use a crockpot, but my instructions are for the oven, so do be sure you plan accordingly if you do not use the oven. There are a few additional recipes on this page that DO use a crockpot, if that is what you prefer.

Pot Roast Recipe Ingredient Choices

Pot Roast Ingredients #1:
Large Potatoes, cut in half
Carrots
Garlic Salt
Fennel Seeds

This one has a slight “spice” taste. The fennel seeds really bring out the juices of the slow cooked meat. An easy pot roast recipe which I make the most, simply because I always have the ingredients on hand.

Pot Roast Ingredients #2:

Large Potatoes, cut in half
Sliced Onion
Onion Salt
Garlic Powder

In this easy pot roast recipe, instead of carrots and fennel seeds I use onion. It’s got a similar taste to the first recipe, except for more of an onion flavor.

How to Cook Pot Roast

For each of the pot roast ingredient suggestions above,  the cooking instructions are the same. I prefer to cook mine in the oven, but you can also use a crockpot. I find it easier to cook in the oven because of the size of the roast and the ability to put in additional ingredients as listed above.

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 325*
2. Place meat in roaster, stab with knife to allow juices to cook threw meat.
3. Fill with about half water (pot roast should be covered with water)
4. Cook for 4-5 hours, checking every hour or so, and flipping roast over.

There’s lots of room for creativity with an easy pot roast recipe for the oven. Try out different vegetables from the garden like green beans, squash, and other slow cooker vegetables. I’m always ready to try a new easy pot roast recipe that taste good, so pass your recipes on if you have them!

Still need more ideas? Try these pot roast recipes that were submitted by visitors. I have not personally tried any of them (just call me stuck in my ways!), but they all sound fantastic. They are perfect if you don’t care to use my method for making pot roast in the oven.

CROCKPOT POT ROAST
2 1/2 lb. Chuck roast
2 packets dry Italian dressing mix OR Ranch dressing mix
1 cup water
Place beef in crockpot, sprinkle seasonings over meat, pour water over all. Cook on low 6-8 hours or until meat shreds easily.

French Dip

3-4 pound Beef Pot Roast ~ sprinkle with 1 TBLS onion flakes and garlic powder to taste
1/4 tsp Thyme
1/4 tsp Rosemary
1 TLBS Beef Bullion
1/4 to 1/3 Cup Soy Sauce

Water to almost cover roast. Cook on low setting 8-10 hours. Shread and serve with crusty buns, mild cheese and a jus sauce. So good!

3-4 lbs. boneless beef roast
2 cups tomato juice
3 cups onions, cooked, chopped
1 clove minced garlic
6-8 potatoes, cut into large chunks
3-4 cups carrots, cut into 2 inch pieces
2 Tbsp. all purpose flour

Spray a Dutch oven with nonstick cooking spray and heat over medium high heat 1 minute. Add roast and brown 2-3 minutes per side. Add 1-3/4 cups tomato juice, onion and garlic. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook 1 hour. Add potatoes and carrots, cover and cook another 45 minutes. Transfer roast and vegetables to a platter. Combine flour and remaining 1/4 cup juice in a bowl. Stir into drippings. Increase heat to medium high. Stir until thickened. Serve gravy over meat and vegetables.
