Thanksgiving Decorations to Make
It's the season for fun fall projects, great food, and family. This page should give you some ideas of Thanksgiving decorations to make as a family. Be sure to see other Thanksgiving ideas for recipes and more.
Hanging Decorations & Wall Decor
Turkeys are usually the theme, but anything related to fall works for decorations. Corn husks, fallen leaves, and pumpkins are usually the most popular items.
Fall wreaths are perfect for hanging decorations. Since fall leaves are very fragle, you'll most likely have to get fake for this project. Take a walk through your local craft store (or visit Jo-Ann.com
- they have some nice fall garland) for wreath items.
If you want to get the kids involved, you can make paper wreaths with tissue paper "leaves". Remember doing this craft as a kid around Christmas time with the green and red tissue paper? You can do it with brown, orange, and red for fall. Just cut out a large circle with another smaller circle in the middle, and let the kids have fun.
"One of my very favorite decorations is to get a fall leaf garland (or lots of them) and intertwine it with orange lights. These can be used all over your house, around your windows, doorways, and especially plant shelves. It's easy, inexpensive if you get the garland on sale, and beautiful."

Decorated Candle Holders
This particular craft isn't just for Thanksgiving - you can use it for Christmas as well, depending on the colors you use. My son made these in preschool, and they are beautiful. They used baby food jars, but you can use any jar you want.
First you'll need colored tissue paper. Since we are making Thanksgiving decorations, you'll probably want a fall color. Brown, orange, or red works nicely. Measure your tissue paper so it wraps around your jar just once, and is no taller than the jar. Decorate the tissue paper with gitter and other small items (no large or heavy items, you don't want to damage your paper). Very carefully glue the paper to the jar, then you can add other items.
Place a small candle inside the jar, and you have yourself a warm and inviting Thanksgiving decoration! If you need some candles, be sure to stop by Prairie Soy Candles for fantastic Thanksgiving scents (such as Pecan Pie or Pumpkin Pie).
Placemats
These Thanksgiving decorations not only give your table some extra flare, but are useful for Thanksgiving dinner as well. Since this is such a wide idea, we've put it on it's own page. For details on how to make your own (or even buy placemats), be sure to see our Thanksgiving placemat page.
Napkin Holders
While these Thanksgiving decorations are usually used for the big day, you can have fun using them for meals the entire month of November. It adds class to your dinner table, and might even spark some very nice dinners with your family!
The easiest way to make napkin holders is with flexible wires, such as the ever popular pipe cleaners. Add beads, ribbons, foam decorations, or anything else your creative mind comes up with. Once decorated, just twist the wire ends together and place around your silverware.
Centerpieces
Again you can use this decoration for just Thanksgiving day, or for the entire month. Some ideas for centerpieces include decorated pumpkins (not carved, of course), cornucopias, turkey decorations, or other fall themed items.

First, ensure you have a variety of different sized pumpkins. Go for a family outing to a pumpkin patch and everyone can select their favorites. The large ones you can carve and decorate and the smaller ones you can place in the living room, den, children's room or wherever you deem appropriate.
Utilize the "use what you have" theory! Go through your cupboards and drawers to find items that can be used as props in your fall display. Find pitchers to use to hold wildflowers and dried grasses, bring out warm throws to toss over your couch, layer fabrics on your tables. (Remember, pretty blankets and quilts can work well!)
Take a nature walk. Gather organic elements that can be used in your fall makeover. Acorns, pinecones, seed pods, bark, even stones can be used as display in bowls around the home. Press pretty leaves and strew them on tables and around centerpieces.
Bring out the candles! If you put away your candles for winter, now is the time to bring them to center stage. Gather groups of inexpensive votives and tie together with scraps of raffia.
Add scent to the home. Simmer apple peels and cinnamon sticks on the stove, or invest in a couple of vials of potpourri oil. They are relatively inexpensive at just a couple bucks apiece, and they last forever as you only need a few drops.
Celebrate the tastes of the harvest season. Keep apples and pomegranates out in bowls, store squashes on countertops, pick up a pumpkin or two at your produce stand and use as a centerpiece, or pile a couple next to the kitchen door.
Most of all, take the time to celebrate this special season and appreciate the comfort we can offer our families in our own homes.
